The Journey of a Coffee Bean: From Harvest to Your Cup

It all begins with a seed. Yet, it is no ordinary seed. It is one that holds the promise of an awakening aroma and a taste that connects continents. Today, we invite you on a journey – the journey of a coffee bean from harvest to your cup.

1. Planting

The voyage of your beloved brew begins in tropical regions around the globe, where the coffee plant thrives. Seeds, better known as coffee cherries, are planted during the rainy season, as they need plenty of water to germinate. It usually takes about 3 to 4 years for the newly planted coffee trees to bear fruit.

2. Harvesting

The next stage is harvesting. This is a meticulous process as coffee cherries do not ripen all at once. Harvesting can be done either by hand or by machine, and in some places, it is still done manually to ensure only the ripest cherries are chosen.

3. Processing

The harvested coffee cherries then undergo processing, either through the dry method (allowing cherries to dry in the sun) or the wet method (removing the pulp and washing the beans). This step is crucial as it impacts the final flavor profile of your coffee.

4. Drying and Milling

Post processing, the beans are dried to an optimal moisture level, and then milled to remove any remaining layers. What remains is what we know as green coffee beans.

5. Sorting and Grading

The green beans are then sorted and graded based on size, weight, and color. This stage is essential in maintaining the premium quality of beans that BICA offers to its customers.

6. Roasting

The most transformational stage is roasting. This is where the beans develop their characteristic coffee flavor. Roasting temperatures and times are adjusted depending on the desired roast level - light, medium, or dark.

7. Packaging and Shipping

Post roasting, the beans are quickly cooled, packaged, and then shipped to coffee lovers around the world. BICA ensures this process is swift, maintaining the freshness of the beans from our roaster to your cup.

8. Grinding

Upon receiving your BICA coffee, the next step is grinding. The grind size, determined by the brewing method you choose, significantly affects the taste of your coffee. A general rule is that the longer the water stays in contact with the coffee, the coarser the grind.

9. Brewing

Brewing is a science and an art. It involves extracting the flavors from the coffee grounds using hot water. The perfect brewing method is down to personal preference. Some prefer the elegance of a French press, while others opt for the quick and convenient drip coffee maker. Whatever method you choose, BICA coffee promises a delightful cup.

10. Tasting

The culmination of the journey is in tasting your coffee. This is where you experience the full array of flavors and undertones developed throughout the coffee's journey. From the fruity, wine-like nuances of African coffee to the bold, chocolatey flavors of Latin American varieties, each sip holds a story.
